Raja is a 2003 French award-winning drama written and directed by Jacques Doillon that explores the large cultural gap between nations and social classes. Fred (Pascal Greggory) is a rich middle-aged Frenchman living in Marrakech, Morocco, trying to find some excitement in his dull and uneventful life. Raja (Najat Benssallem) is a 19-year-old orphan girl who is struggling to find her place in this scary and complicated world with little external support. Fred is attracted to Raja and is determined to seduce her and fill his emotional void. Raja is aware of his high social status, but her cultural values and anxiety are a great barrier that prevent her from exploring their mutual feelings. When Fred tries desperately to conquer her wild and restless heart, the cultural and educational differences begin to show their true proportions. Although a sophisticated gentleman, Fred is struggling to find a way to impress Raja and establish a passionate relationship based on trust.
