Rally 'round The Flag, Boys! is director Leo McCarey's 1958 adaptation of the Max Schulman novel of the same name. The title is taken from the song "Battle Cry of Freedom". The movie takes a focused look at the lives of suburban American commuters in the mid twentieth century and the frustrations that it creates. The movie is based around the effects of a proposed military base on a small community in Connecticut and a couple that live there. The protagonist Harry Bannerman (Paul Newman) is brought into conflict with his wife Grace (Joanne Woodward) because her opposition to the base creates problems for his role as liaison with the military. Their head-to head battle splits the couple (and the community) straight down the middle. Events take a farcical turn for the worse when Bannerman is caught in what appears to be a compromising situation with sultry neighbour Angela Hoffa (Joan Collins).
