Rambling Rose is a 1991 American film by director Martha Coolidge, starring Laura Dern, Diana Ladd, and Robert Duvall. In the movie, Laura Dern is Rose, a troubled girl who enters service for the Hillyer family as a domestic servant. Rose has a long history of sexual abuse and has come to confuse overt and promiscuous sex with love, leading to complications when she develops a crush on Mr. Hillyer (Robert Duvall). Mr. Hillyer, a religious man, resists her advances, but even goes a step farther, enlisting the help of an unscrupulous physician to “fix” Rose’s problems for good. That is when Mrs. Hillyer (Diana Ladd), a feminist, steps up as Rose’s new protector. Rambling Rose was received with great critical acclaim, receiving nominations for two 1992 Oscars, two 1992 Golden Globes, two 1992 Young Artist Awards, and two 1992 Independent Spirit Awards, as well as winning three 1992 Independent Spirit Awards, and a 1991 Best Actress Award at the Montreal World Film Festival for Laura Dern’s portrayal of Rose.moreless
