Rancho Deluxe, scripted by Thomas McGuane, is a low-key comic Western that satirizes most of the Wild West film traditions. The story features two pals, Jack (Jeff Bridges) and Cecil (Sam Waterston), both escaping their families and enjoying the life of idle, fun-loving drifters surviving by stealing cattle. They target a huge cattle ranch owned by the wealthy John Brown (Clifton James). Brown hires two men to find the rustlers but they are totally incompetent, more like the Keystone Cops than Wyatt Earp. Brown then turns to a former cattle thief and outrageous private investigator, Henry Beige (Slim Pickens). Henry promises to bring the culprits to justice. Lots of comic hits and misses follow in the ensuing chase scenes. The wacky dialogue, sexual innuendoes, and exaggerated characters combine to keep the humor coming throughout the film. The story follows the transition from the 'old' west to the 'new' west with some insightful humor. The film also features a great score with songs by Jimmy Buffett.moreless
