Reap the Wild Wind is a 1942 action adventure film directed by Cecil B. DeMille. Set in Key West in the 1840's, the film focuses on the salvage business in Southern Florida. When a hurricane strands a clipper-ship captained by Jack Stuart (John Wayne), salvagers Raymond Cutler (Raymond Massey) and Loxi Claiborne (Paulette Goddard) rush to the scene to claim the wreck. Cutler arrives first, leaving Loxi to rescue the Captain. Loxi takes Stuart back to her home to nurse him back to health, and soon falls in love with him. When visiting Charlotte with her cousin Drusilla (Susan Hayward), she runs into Steve Tolliver (Ray Milland), head of the shipping line where Jack is employed. To find him another position, Loxi seduces Tolliver and convinces him to give Jack a steamship to captain. Soon after, Tolliver arrives in Key West to be near Loxi and rid the area of pirates. In the process, Tolliver is shanghaied by Cutler's men. Hearing of his capture, Loxi persuades Jack to help in his rescue. Their relationship soon sours, however, when Jack finds out about Loxi's subterfuge. Now an enemy, Jack conspires with Cutler to sink the steamship he's been given to command. When Tolliver discovers the plan, he convinces Loxi to go after him in pursuit. Torn, Loxi struggles to do the right thing before it's too late.moreless
