Recess: School's Out is an animated film directed by Chuck Sheetz based on Disney Channel's TV series Recess that centers on Theodore Jasper ÒT.J.Ó Detweiller as he discovers a plot by a nefarious Dr. Phillium Benedict to rid Third Street School and all other schools of their beloved summer vacation. When school finally let out in June, T.J. finds himself abandoned as all of his friends, including Vince, Mikey, Gretchen, Gus, and Ashley, go off to various summer camps, leaving him to fend for himself. During a bored bike ride out, he discovers the plot as Principal Prickly disappears in a burst of light. T.J. manages to bribe his sister to get his friends in order to convince them of what he found. As Benedict aims to destroy the summer for the kids, T.J. rushes to get his friends' help while Benedict discovers it is not only the students who love summer vacations.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times

Complacent yet competent animation kids will enjoy despite its mundane nature.

  • 30

The New York Times A.O. Scott

The unfortunate thing is that children will probably waste their summers indoors watching "Recess" over and over again.

  • 20

    Variety Todd McCarthy

Animation is dull and characterless, and vocal talent has evidently received blanket direction to, when in doubt, shout.
