Red Road is a 2006 award-winning British drama written and directed by Andrea Arnold which centers on the sensitive inner world of a lonely woman. Jackie (Kate Dickie) works as an operator for a security camera service for the Glasgow City Council in Scotland. Every day she sees various people who are passing by, minding their own business. Being a lonely person, isolated from society, she lives in a world of dreams and desperate hopes. When suddenly a strange man, Clyde (Tony Curran), starts to appear regularly in front of the camera, she begins to monitor him and follow his every move with a resilient curiosity. It is not clear what made her be so passionate about confronting this man, but her interest in him becomes mixed with immense fear. Jackie finds the courage to follow her instincts and go after this man in real world. She ends up meeting him at a party at his apartment, trying to understand why she is attracted to him. When the shocking truth surfaces Jackie becomes changed forever.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

A spellbinding, intelligent thriller that takes its time to get where it's going but is well worth the trip.

  • 70

The New York Times A.O. Scott

In the arresting Red Road, the dire Orwellian warning that Big Brother is watching has evolved from a grim fantasy of totalitarianism into a banal fact of life.

  • 60

    Variety

Sensual, dark in every sense, but a touch derivative, Red Road reps an impressive feature debut for Brit writer-helmer Andrea Arnold, an Oscar-winner for her knockout short "Wasp."
