Rating:

Repo Man is the 1984 action comedy sci-fi cult classic written and directed by Alex Cox (Sid & Nancy, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Straight to Hell). The landscape of Eighties era Los Angeles, and its urban decay is the interesting backdrop to this cadre of Repo Men who live day-by-day like Japanese Ronin, with nothing but their wits and their 'Code of Honor.' Emilio Estevez plays Otto, a rebellious young punk who gets fired from his job as a stock boy for mouthing off and attacking a coworker. One day, Otto gets unwittingly drafted into helping a man name Bud repossess a car, and from there, everything goes to the fans to be hit. Angry old ladies, skinhead criminals, government agents, alien conspiracies and even crazy rival repo hombres float through as Otto floats through, amused and bemused, and occasionally terrified. Soon, a $20,000 commission comes up on the docket for anyone who can obtain a certain Chevy Malibu.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

The New York Times Vincent Canby

The real thing. It's a sneakily rude, truly zany farce that treats its lunatic characters with a solemnity that perfectly matches the way in which they see themselves.

  • 90

    Variety

Repo Man has the type of unerring energy that leaves audiences breathless and entertained.

  • 75

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This is the kind of movie that baffles Hollywood, because it isn't made from any known formula and doesn't follow the rules.
