Repo! The Genetic Opera is a horror-rock opera musical taking place after a worldwide epidemic of systemic organ failures has allowed the multi-billion dollar biotech firm GeneCo to offer for-profit organ transplants. The company offers all manner of easy terms to obtain necessary body parts, but the terms of repayment are often ruthless. Customers who default on payments find themselves targeted by the ruthless Repo men, enforcers who come to repossess the defaulted organs. Shino Wallace (Alexa Vega) is a 17-year-old believing she has inherited a deadly blood disease from her mother, Marni (Sarah Power). Her overprotective father Nathan (Anthony Head) is GeneCo's head repo man, but has been questioning his motives and loyalties since the death of Marni. Together with Shilo and a host of unconventional characters, they take it upon themselves to change the world, wresting control from GeneCo at the massive event known as the Genetic Opera.

Metacritic Score

  • 40

The New York Times Nathan Lee

Feels destined to please a campy coterie of fans and no one else.

  • 20

    Variety

So over-the-top it's purple. At the same time, it's not too many lengths of intestine beyond some mainstream movies, "Sweeney Todd" being the most obvious comparison.

  • 10

    Los Angeles Times

The film is bad -- not good-bad, tacky-bad or fun-bad, just plain awful and nearly unwatchable.
