Requiem for a Dream is a feature film directed by Darren Aronofsky that is based on a 1978 novel by Hubert Selby Jr. The film takes place in South Brooklyn, and follows the lives of Harry Goldfarb (Jared Leto), his mother Sara (Ellyn Burstyn), his best friend Tyrone (Marlon Wayans) and his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly). Set to the ominous soundtrack by Clint Mansell and the Kronos Quartet, the plot revolves around the theme of the characters' addictions. While Sara Goldfarb spends her lonely days in Brighton Beach dreaming about appearing on a television game show, Harry, Tyrone and Marion scheme up ways to get rich quick selling heroin. The film begins in Summer, when the characters' dreams seem attainable: Harry wants to open a shop for Marion's fashion designs, Tyrone wants to make his mother proud by getting off the streets, and Sara wants to slim down enough to fit into her red dress to wear on television. But as the seasons progress, the dreams of the characters start to slip through the cracks as their addictions spiral out of control. Though the film is graphic and utterly grim, Aronofsky received much praise for his film depicting the shattered lives of four characters striving for an unattainable American dream.
