Requiem for a Heavyweight is a 1962 drama about a boxer nearing the end of a long career. Luis "Mountain" Rivera (Anthony Quinn) retires after being knocked out by Cassius Clay (portraying himself). Unbeknownst to Mountain, his manager, Maish (Jackie Gleason), had bet on him to lose earlier in the fight to Clay and now owes bookies thousands of dollars. Now retired, Mountain is encouraged to try to get a normal job by both his trainer, Army (Mickey Rooney) and a social worker in whom Mountain is romantically interested, Grace Miller (Julie Harris). Needing Mountain to fight one more time so that he can cover his gambling debt, Maish gets him drunk at a bar and the interview turns into a disaster. Maish succeeds in convincing Mountain to fight again, this time as a wrestler named "Big Chief Mountain Rivera." Though he is suffering from debilitating physical and mental problems, Mountain ultimately realizes that fighting is the only thing he knows how to do.moreless
