Rating:

Restoration is a historical drama directed by Michael Hoffman. The story takes place during the 17th century in England and revolves around an aspiring physician, Robert Merival (Robert Downey Jr.). Robert finds himself in the good graces of King Charles II (Sam Neill) after saving one of the King's beloved spaniels. Robert is awarded with a place in the King's court, and accepts the position even though it means setting aside his budding career as a physician and spurning his best friend, John Pearce (David Thewlis). However, Robert quickly realizes that his new position is not without a price when he is ordered to marry one of the King's mistresses, Celia (Polly Walker). The King's intention is to ward off suspicion about his relationship with Celia by linking her with Robert. The King strictly orders Robert not to fall in love and not to become intimate with Celia. However, Robert finds himself falling for the beautiful and free-spirited Celia, but cannot act on his feelings without suffering the wrath of the King.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 88

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

The film has many virtues, but for me the most enchanting is simply the lust with which it depicts a bold and colorful era in history.

  • 75

    Chicago Tribune Michael Wilmington

If one judged movies purely on the basis of photography and sets, Restoration would deserve a place near the top. [26 Jan 1996, p.C]

  • 63

    Philadelphia Inquirer Carrie Rickey

Restoration moves from farce to spiritual parable to melodrama with such inconsistency that it could be a case study in 17th-century multiple personality disorder. [02 Feb 1996, p.05]
