Richard III is a 1955 classic adaptation of the Shakespearian play of the same name. In it, Richard (Laurence Olivier), Duke of Gloucester, is a deformed man with a hunched back and a withered arm, but his deformities do not limit him. He is a warrior on the battlefield, and he is passionate in the bedroom. Richard conspires to have his brother, King Edward IV of England (Cedric Hardwicke) placed on the throne. However, he almost immediately begins to wonder whether he would be a better king. Though he has helped his brother all along the way, his jealousy overtakes him. Richard comes up with a complex plan to frame his other brother, George (John Gielgud), and then to have George executed. Edward is so overwhelmed when he gets the news that George is dead that he succumbs to an illness and dies. With his son promoted Edward V, Richard must now route the new king to take his place. Richard develops a series of complex conspiracies which slowly work him closer and closer to the throne.moreless
