Richard III, released in 1995 by United Artists, brings the classic Shakespearian play into the 20th Century with this retelling set in 1930s Britain. A bloody civil war between the House of Lancaster and the House of York has left the country under fascist rule. Richard (Ian McKellen) is plotting to seize the throne from his brother Edward (John Wood). He seduces and weds Lady Anne (Kristin Scott Thomas), whose husband he killed during the war. Richard has his other brother Clarence (Nigel Hawthorne) killed and the grief of his brother's death leads to Edward's death. The crown falls to Edward's son, the Prince of Wales (Marc Williamson) and Richard is named his protector. But the boy and his brother are locked in the Tower of London. In the end, only Richmond (Dominic West) is left to challenge Richard's grasp for the throne. The movie received Academy Award recognition for art direction and costume design.
