Movie Summary

Director:
Benjamin Ross
Released:
1999
Rating:

RKO 281 is a fact-based drama about the making of the legendary film, Citizen Kane. After his infamous radio broadcast, "War of the Worlds", enfant terrible Orson Welles (Liev Schreiber) is brought to Hollywood to make movies. Despite his youth, he is given almost free reign by the studio to make virtually any motion picture that he wanted. What RKO Pictures doesn't expect, however, is that Welles will decide to make a thinly-veiled film about powerful newspaper publisher, William Randolph Hearst (James Cromwell). As Welles works with screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (John Malkovich) to perfect the script for Citizen Kane, the forces of Hearst fight to prevent the film from ever being made. With the assistance of gossip columnist, Louella Parsons (Brenda Blethyn), Hearst tries to bury Citizen Kane. What he doesn't count on, however, is the resilience and dedication of Welles who intends to make the greatest film that Hollywood has ever seen.
