Road Ends begins with a secretive outsider, Esteban Maceda (Chris Sarandon), driving through the nighttime desert and stopping in a small sleepy town. Esteban is quickly spotted by Police Chief Gilchrist (Dennis Hopper), but it's not immediately apparent whether Esteban is one of the good guys or the bad guys. Gilchrist is suspicious about Esteban's reasons for being in town and sends him to the local bed and breakfast operated by Kat (Mariel Hemingway). Esteban signs the register under the name Gene Gere, which coincidentally is the name of an L.A. FBI agent (Peter Coyote) working on a drug case involving Esteban. Gilchrist, who has a crush on Kat, adds jealousy to his list of reasons to monitor Esteban's activities when Kat becomes attracted to Esteban. The movie moves back and forth between events in L.A. involving the real Gene Cere, and events in the small town involving Esteban. As the movie progresses, the connection between Gene and Esteban becomes clear.moreless
