Rating:

RocknRolla is a 2008 crime drama from English writer/director Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels) and starring Gerard Butler, Mark Strong, Ludacris, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Tom Wilkinson, and Jeremy Piven. The story, like Ritchie's previous crime films, features a large cast of criminal characters as they do whatever is necessary to secure wealth, prestige, and freedom in London's dangerous underworld. Crime boss Lenny Cole (Wilkinson) has more than his share of troubles. He's made a real estate deal with a Russian tycoon that could lead to big returns, but when a gang of thieves steals the Russian's payment, and Lenny's crack-addicted stepson, Johnny Quid (Toby Kebbell) steals the Russian's lucky painting, Lenny's good fortune is at an all time low. Bullets fly as the players hunt down the precious lucky painting and everyone tries to escape the high-stakes game with their lives and freedom. RocknRolla is a fast-paced action film full of charming characters and witty dialogue, and a must-see for fans of Guy Ritchie's previous films.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Variety Joe Leydon

A cleverly constructed, sensationally stylish and often darkly hilarious seriocomic caper.

  • 60

    Los Angeles Times

Ritchie whisks you along on a whirlwind tour, but he's not averse to putting on the brakes long enough to admire some of his favorite attractions.

  • 50

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

Like the filmmaking itself, the violence has no passion, no oomph, no sense of real or even feigned purpose.
