Roll Bounce is a 2005 drama about the adventures of a group of roller skaters living in Chicago during the late 1970s. Following the death of his mother, Xavier Smith (Bow Wow) immerses himself in becoming a better roller skater. When his local rink closes, Xavier and his friends make the trip to Sweetwater, the more upscale roller rink across town. Looked down upon by the rink's manager, Bernard (Nick Cannon), Xavier and his friends strive to showcase their skills. Realizing that winning an upcoming roller disco competition is the only way to gain the respect of their peers, Xavier and his friends decide to enter the contest. As Xavier dedicates himself to training and practicing, he begins to quarrel with both his father, Curtis (Chi McBride), and his girlfriend Naomi (Meagan Good), neither of whom understand why he is so obsessed with winning. Ultimately, Xavier must learn the lesson that it is far more important to respect yourself than to get the respect of others.moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

Has plenty of affectionate humor to balance some serious heart-tugging. And as for the roller-skating, it for sure provides a lot of razzle-dazzle action with lots of virtuoso terp...

    Variety Justin Chang

Funky disco-era throwback never fully jells with a surprisingly intense central tale of father-son estrangement, strongly acted by Chi McBride and 18-year-old rapper-thesp Bow Wow.

The New York Times Manohla Dargis

A drowsy comedy about a handful of kids grooving and roller-skating, Roll Bounce has heart and good vibes but little else to recommend it.
