Rome Open City is a movie about Nazi-occupied Rome. It tells the story of a group of resistance fighters under the leadership of Giorgio Manfredi (Marcello Pagliero). Pursued by the Gestapo, Manfredi is forced to seek a new identity and flee the city. He does so with the help of his friend Francesco (Francesco Grandjacquet) along with Francesco's fiancee, Pina (Anna Magnani) and a priest, Don Pietro Pellegrini (Aldo Fabrizi). However, danger looms on the horizon. Can his lover, Marina Mari (Maria Michi), be trusted? Is there any escape from the Nazi threat? The movie was filmed by Roberto Rossellini on scraps of film, all that was left after the Nazi withdrawal, and some of the extras were actually Nazi prisoners of war. Shot immediately after the liberation, it clearly shows the state in which the city was left after the war. Because of its limitations, it created a new style of cinema and is considered the first of the Italian neo-realist films.moreless
