Movie Summary

Director:
Baz Luhrmann
Released:
1996
Rating:
PG-13

William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet makes Shakespeare's romantic tragedy a modern day classic. The story takes place in Verona Beach where swords are replaced by guns. The Capulets and Montagues are warring businesses with a deep hatred for each other. The burden of this hate falls on the young generation that shows it by the bullets of their guns. The story is of passionate, albeit, accidental love. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) finds himself a victim of unrequited love and Juliet (Claire Danes) with an unwanted marriage proposal, that is until they meet. The film opens with a gunfight showing the hate between the Montague boys and the Capulet boys where they blow up a gas station. The Chief of Police gives them a foreshadowing warning if they continue with thier behavior, their lives "shall pay the forfeit of the peace". With the help of Mercutio (Harold Perrineau) Romeo has a ticket to a Capulet party where he meets Juliet. Romeo's ticket will lead to love, realization and eventually loss.

I have never seen anything remotely approaching the mess that the new punk version of "Romeo & Juliet" makes of Shakespeare's tragedy.
