Rating:
PG-13

Rough Magic is a 1995 comedy drama directed by Clare Peploe. The film is set in the 1950s and follows the thoughtful magician's assistant Myra Shumway (played by Bridget Fonda) as she travels through rural Mexico in an attempt to escape her wealthy politician fiance and find a Mayan shaman to teach her the ancient principles of actual magic. Meanwhile her fiance has set a gritty private investigator named Alex Ross (played by Russell Crowe) after her. Alex used to be a former photojournalist who was traumatized by what he saw in Hiroshima. Alex ends up joining Myra on the hunt for the Mayan shaman and he falls in love with her. However this feeling isn't mutual. Myra eventually finds the Mayan shaman and drinks a potion that gives her magical powers. This film is an intriguing blend of magical realism and old fashioned mystery films. It was based on the novel entitled Miss Shumway Waves a Wand written by James Hadley Chase.
