Roxie Hart is a 1942 comedy film directed by William Wellman about murder and intrigue in the entertainment business and is the basis of the movie and Broadway musical Chicago. The movie is based on the 1927 silent film, Chicago. The plot tells the story of Roxie Hart (Ginger Rogers), a struggling showgirl, who hopes that confessing to a murder that she didn't commit will help to bolster her failing career and give her some much-needed publicity. She gets the idea for this lie after another murderess (played by Iris Adrian) gains fame and publicity in the aftermath of her own crime. Adolphe Menjou rounds out the cast as Roxie's slippery and blustering lawyer, Billy Flynn. The film also stars George Montgomery, Lynne Overman, and Nigel Bruce. During the film the audience is treated to two dance numbers, and the courtroom scene stands out as one of the all-time classic film scenes. A must see for fans of the Broadway musical Chicago.moreless
