Runaway is a 1984 science-fiction crime drama directed and written by Michael Crichton. In the film, robots are a part of everyday life, and every home has one of them. As with any household appliance, the robots break down. Broken robots, "runaways," are more complicated than the average appliance and pose some risk to people and property when they malfunction. Due to this danger, runaways are handled by the local police. Sergeant Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck) and Karen Thompson (Cynthia Rhodes) are two of the police officers assigned to the department that handles runaways. Karen is new to the department and anxious to get started. Ramsay explains to Karen not to get that excited because the job is pretty simple and boring. When a mad scientist, Dr. Charles Luther (Gene Simmons), changes the robots wiring strange things begin to happen, which makes Ramsay and Thompson's job much more difficult. As Ramsay begins to investigate he realizes the robots may not be safe to be around.
