Running Free was released in 2000 and directed by Sergey Bodrov. It starts off in 1914 when a mare gives to birth to a foal while she is en route to Africa by way of a German supply ship. Once the ship has been docked in a mining community, the colt is separated from his mother and then suffers from the separation. An orphaned boy, Richard (Chase Moore as Young Richard) who is working in the stables takes a liking to this new colt. Richard decides to be the caretaker for the colt. A war then breaks out and the stable is suddenly abandoned and the colt is then left to fend for himself. He is the only escapee in to the desert, which is where he meets an Oryx antelope and a young girl native to the land named Nyka (Maria Geelbooi). Together, they all teach the colt how to survive on his own and become his friends in the process.moreless
