Ruthless is a 1948 film noir classic that follows the tragically ambitious Horace Vendig (Zachary Scott) from his humble childhood to his conniving adulthood. The film begins at an elegant philanthropic event, where Vendig's childhood friend, Vic Lambdin (Louis Hayward), recounts the true story of this supposedly generous man. As children, they save a wealthy girl from drowning and her grateful parents, the Burnsides, decide to adopt Vendig. He eventually becomes engaged to Martha (Diana Lynn). Then Vendig's ruthless ambition drives him to find a better catch in the better connected and richer Susan Duane (Martha Vickers). He coldly leaves Martha for Susan, but he still is not satisfied with his astonishing rise from rags to a New York penthouse. He then unscrupulously seduces Christa Mansfield (Lucille Bremer), the young wife of an older businessman, as part of a plot to increase his wealth. This time, Vendig may have finally met his match in the greedy Buck Mansfield (Sydney Greenstreet). Director Edgar G. Ulmer ("Detour") casts a dark, unrelenting light on the underbelly of an American success story in this provocative character study.moreless
