2006
Rating:

RV is a 2006 comedy that was directed by Barry Sonnefeld. Bob Munro (Robin Williams), an executive at a California beverage company, feels like he has lost control of his life. His boss Todd Mallory (Will Arnett) hires a young upstart that Bob is convinced is going to replace him. At home, his daughter Cassie (JoJo) is an angry teenager he doesn't feel like he knows anymore and his son Carl (Josh Hutcherson) is just weird at times. Bob has arranged to take his wife (Cheryl Hines) and kids on a relaxing vacation to Hawaii, but Todd sabotages those plans by telling him he wants Bob to present a merger proposal to a small soda company in Boulder, Colorado that same week. Bob doesn't want to tell his family why they can't go to Hawaii, so he pretends that he thinks a road trip across the United States in an RV will help them bond and will bring them closer together. Along the way, the family runs into a number of mishaps and adventures, and they actually begin to grow closer, but will Bob's lies tear their new bonds apart?moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 50

    Variety Justin Chang

RV works up an ingratiating sweetness that partially compensates for its blunt predictability and meager laughs.

  • 30

    The New York Times

Nowadays no family movie is complete without a values-oriented agenda and a bountiful supply of fecal matter, and RV supplies both.

  • 30

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Crust

The bedraggled movie limps along to its phony hogwash of an ending, adding the ignominy of sentimentality to its previous sin of being so derivative.
