Saint Joan is a 1957 English-American film, adapted from the classic play of the same name by George Bernard Shaw. Starring Richard Widmark, Richard Todd, Anton Walbrook and John Gielgud, and introducing Jean Seberg in her first film role, Saint Joan tells the story of the life of Joan of Arc. After she has prophetic visions of Saints Catherine and Margaret telling her that she will lead the French army against the English, Joan, a young peasant girl, travels to meet The Dauphin, King of France (Richard Widmark), at his palace. He appoints her as head of the French Army and she enjoys many victories, but when she is suspected of witchcraft, tragedy begins to unfold.

    Trivia, Notes, Quotes and Allusions

    FILTER BY TYPE

    • TRIVIA (1)

      • Screenwriter Graham Greene was given only six weeks to write the script, much less time than he would have liked. He claimed to have no especial fondness for George Bernard Shaw's original play, despite its classic status, or for Shaw's work in general. His script greatly reduced the roles of The Inquisitor and Brother Martin, which are usually regarded as crucial.

    • QUOTES (2)

    • NOTES (1)

      • Otto Preminger regarded George Bernard Shaw's play as one of the great plays of the twentieth century, but noted that the title role was always played by an actress much older than the real Joan of Arc, who died at 19. He announced that he would find a real teenager to play the part in this film version, and interviewed well over a thousand girls before settling on the unknown Jean Seberg, of Marshalltown, Iowa. Although it was her serious ambition to become a professional actress, her only experience previously had been in school plays and amateur productions. However, she did become a film star and an acclaimed actress.
