Saint John of Las Vegas is a 2009 drama comedy film written and directed by Hue Rhodes. The film stars Steve Buscemi, Romany Malco, Peter Dinklage, comedian Sarah Silverman. It was based upon a story by the famous Italian writer Dante Alighieri. Buscemi produced it himself, along with Stanley Tucci and Spike Lee. Buscemi plays a compulsive gambler named John. John has finally put his gambling ways behind him and started a new life outside of Las Vegas, in Albuquerque. However his boss Mr. Townsend (played by Peter Dinklage) sends John back to Las Vegas alongside his partner Virgil (who's an auto insurance fraud debunker) to investigate a crooked insurance claim which forces him right back into his old life style. Before John leaves he begins an awkward romance with his strange co-worker Jill (played by Sarah Silverman). In Las Vegas John comes into contact with a variety of sordid characters such as a paraplegic stripper, a nude militant, and a human torch from a carnival.

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

This movie is all elbows. Nothing fits. It doesn't add up. It has some terrific free-standing scenes, but they need more to lean on.

    Los Angeles Times

The presence of the ever-reliable Steve Buscemi adds a welcome boost to Saint John of Las Vegas, an otherwise unremarkable debut feature from writer-director Hue Rhodes.

  • 20

The New York Times Stephen Holden

This disjointed, desperately whimsical film is simply not funny: not for a minute.
