Salaam Bombay! is a 1988 Hindi film directed by Mira Nair and starring Tara Iasrado, Hansa Vithal, Chanda Sharma, Anita Kanwar, Nana Patekar, and Raghuvir Yadav. In her first fictional feature film, Mira Naira (Monsoon Wedding) captures the essence of street life in Bombay. The film tells the story of Krishna, a young boy who gets in trouble with his mom when he sets his brother's bike on fire. His mother tells him to work in the circus until he's earned enough money to pay for the damaged bike. When the circus disappears, Krishna travels to Bombay to find a different way to make the money. As soon as he arrives, however, he is robbed of his every possession. He befriends the thieves and regains his belongings but soon realizes that he will never be able to save money in the big city, for he is caught up with the wrong crowd. As Krishna becomes further involved in the street life, he gets drifts further away from ever seeing his mother again.moreless

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Village Voice Leslie Camhi

The real star of this film is the crowded, neon-lit byways of the city itself.

  • 75

    Christian Science Monitor David Sterritt

The story sometimes seems hesitant to confront the most harrowing implications of the harsh realities it portrays. But it benefits greatly from Syed's close-to-the-bone performance...

  • 60

    Variety

Director Mira Nair indulges in some melodramatic explorations, however, dangerously verging on a romanticized Oriental tearjerker mood.
