Sands of Iwo Jima is a 1949 World War II movie directed by Allan Dwan. It tells the story of the unshakable and tough marine Sargeant John Stryker (John Wayne) and his platoon of marines fighting their way through the Pacific theatre, particularly the battle on the Japanese controlled island of Iwo Jima. Because of his tough methods, he isn't liked by his crew, especially Private Peter Conway (John Agar) and Private Al Thomas (Forrest Tucker). However, as they fight together through the brutal battlefields of Iwo Jima, the men begin to acquire some admiration for him. Meanwhile, Stryker has a brief romantic interlude with a bar girl (Adele Mara). Real combat stock footage was used to make the movie as authentic as possible, and when the legendary flag raising on Mount Suribachi is reenacted, the actual flag that was used in the battle is used. Also, the surviving marines that raised the flag appear in a cameo role.
