Savage Messiah is a 2002 drama thriller movie by director Mario Azzopardi, starring Polly Walker and Luc Picard. Based on a true story, the movie tells the tale of a woman's attempts to bring down a sadistic religious zealot. Paula Jackson (Polly Walker) is a small town social worker who is at first wowed by a religious cult headed by Roch "Moses" Theriault (Luc Picard), before realizing that there is more to the religious commune than meets the eye. Moses wields a frighteningly extreme power over his followers and a murderous maniacal streak. Even more frightening, considering that the events of the film are based on the reality of a cult in Quebec, are the brutal, even torturous, punishments that Moses comes up with for his followers. The film was very well received and was nominated for a 2003 Directors Guild of Canada (DCG) Award and four 2003 Genie Awards, as well as winning three additional 2003 Genie Awards. Savage Messiah is rated R for graphic violence, adult situations, profanity, and sexual situations.moreless
