Save Me is a 2007 film that delves into the controversial "ex-gay" religious movement, where prayer is thought to "cure" homosexuality. Save Me is the story of Mark (Chad Allen), a young gay man whose struggle with drug and sex addictions has left him broken and battered, both spiritually and emotionally. Forced into treatment after an overdose, Mark is admitted to Genesis House, a Christian ministry run by Gayle (Judith Light) and her husband Ted (Stephen Lang). Genesis House is a center for "recovering" homosexuals, a place of spiritual healing to lead gay men back to the path of righteousness. Gayle believes she can cure all gay men of their affliction, but Mark proves to be resistant to her form of therapy. Mark instead turns to his Genesis House mentor, Scott (Robert Gant), for comfort and solace. Mark and Scott's friendship quickly turns romantic, forcing Gayle to re-evaluate all she thinks she understands.

Metacritic Score

  • 80

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

This is a modest, thoughtful, independent production of exceptional insight and quietly devastating power.

  • 60

    Variety Dennis Harvey

The first feature from new gay-focused production company Mythgarden, is a welcome exception in that it effectively dramatizes the issues without caricaturing or pillorizing either...

  • 50

The New York Times Nathan Lee

Never quite shakes off its aura of second-rate made-for-TV movie, Save Me has a lot of heart but little nerve and no surprise.
