Save The Last Dance is a romantic drama about ballet dancer Sara (Julia Stiles) in her new urban home in Chicago, and her hip-hop dancing love interest Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). After her mother passes away, Sara moves to Chicago with her father. Distraught over her mother's passing, the talented dancer gives up on ballet and struggles to fit in at her new school where she is one of the few white girls. When she goes to a hip hop dance club, sparks fly with Derek, and a rivalry develops between Sara and his ex. Derek encourages Sara to audition for the prestigious Julliard, which she has avoided since she auditioned and didn't make it the night of her mother's death. Derek is struggling to stay focused on his college career while having violent law-breaking friends, while Sara struggles to find her passion for dance again. This hit romance movie led to a straight to video sequel, Save The Last Dance 2.
