Saving Face is a 2004 comedy about the difficulties and joys of following an unconventional path in life. Wil Pang (Michelle Krusiec) thinks everything is going her way in life. She's an ambitious surgeon and is just falling in love with her boss's daughter, Viv (Lynn Chen), a beautiful dancer. However, Wil's life changes drastically when her mother, Hwei-Lan Gao (Joan Chen), shows up on her doorstep. Wil discovers that her widowed mother is pregnant, a scandal that means Gao is no longer welcome in her traditional Chinese-American community. Wil reluctantly offers her mother a place to stay and tries to give emotional support. However, Wil's life feels crowded with Gao around. Her relationship with Viv starts to suffer when Wil is too anxious to let her mother know she's a lesbian. Wil has a stroke of genius: she'll set her mother up with eligible bachelors so that Gao can "save face" and return to her old life.moreless
