Say Anything is the classic romance film which follows the romance between an underachiever and a high school valedictorian. We join Lloyd Dobler, played by John Cusack, a slacker, average student, and aspiring kickboxer as he falls in love with Diane Court (Ione Skye). Diane is an overachieving, intelligent and beautiful girl who has just graduated as high school valedictorian, and has won a major fellowship to study in England at the end of the summer. Diane's social life has suffered because of her studies, and when Lloyd asks her to go on a date, she is intrigued and the two start the beginnings of a relationship. Lloyd tries to get help from his female friends and sister, concerned that starting his first serious relationship with a girl who will soon be leaving might not be the best idea. Diane is also going through her own difficulties, concerned for her father who is under investigation by the IRS, and is also pressuring her not to date an underachiever like Lloyd. Find out if these young lovers can keep it together, or if the pressures and responsibilities of life tear them apart in the classic love story, Say Anythingmoreless

Metacritic Score

  • 100

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

That such intelligence could be contained in a movie that is simultaneously so funny and so entertaining is some kind of a miracle.

  • 70

    The New York Times

The predictable surface of Say Anything is constantly being cracked by characters who think and talk like real people and by John Cusack's terrifically natural, appealing Lloyd.

  • 60

    Variety

A half-baked love story, full of good intentions but uneven in the telling.
