Scarface is a crime drama from 1932 produced by enigmatic Howard Hughes and directed by Howard Hawks. This American gangster movie is loosely based on the life of notorious mobster Al Capone, whose nickname was Scarface. Once Big Louis Costillo (Harry J. Vejar), the former antiquated gang leader, is eliminated his bodyguard Tony Camonte (Paul Muni) assumes Costillo's leadership position and gains possession of the bootlegging rackets in Chicago during the Prohibition era. Tony leads with a violent enforcement that quickly makes him a threat to Johnny Lovo (Osgood Perkins) and the other bosses in town unless they all work for him. Tony's family life becomes a challenge for him when his sister Francesca Camonte (Ann Dvorak) demands her independence from his overprotective grasp. Scarface was a groundbreaking gangster film that influenced future gangland films including the critically acclaimed 1983 Scarface starring Al Pacino. Oscar winner Paul Muni and George Raft quickly became major Hollywood royalty after the release of this influential film.moreless
