The Scarlet Pimpernel is a period film set in 1792 during the French Revolution. During this time in France's history, citizens were routinely arrested and sent to their deaths at the guillotine for minor infractions of the law. Having no recourse, prisoners relied on a man known to them only as The Scarlet Pimpernel (Leslie Howard) to intervene and save their lives. The Pimpernel masqueraded as an unobtrusive citizen on the surface while he secretly investigated the cases of the harshly sentenced prisoners. To the chagrin of law enforcement, he somehow managed to have the unjust executions stopped. While visiting Paris, The Pimpernel met and fell in love with a beautiful young actress named Marguerite Blakeney (Merle Oberon). Shortly after they marry, The Pimpernel discovered that Marguerite's former suitor was none other than the chief agent of the Committee Of Public Safety, Paul Chauvelin (Raymond Massey). Chauvelin was given a direct order from his superior to find out the secret identity of The Scarlet Pimpernel and to stop him before he could save Dauphin, heir to the throne of France, from the guillotine.moreless
