School of Flesh, L'ecole de la chair, is a mystery romance film from Artemis Productions that was written by Jacques Fieschi and directed by Benoit Jacquot. This tangled love story was adapted from the novel by Yukio Mishima. Dominique (Isabelle Huppert) is a wealthy and high-powered fashion executive who becomes sexually entranced by Quentin (Vincent Martinez) a bisexual, hustling young man half her age that she meets at a disco party. Her world is turned upside down as she indulges herself in a tempestuous new world. Dominique asks Quentin to move in with her. This sexually fueled tryst fulfills Dominique's physical needs but leaves her emotionally drained with all of the baggage and history that her young lover holds. In an effort to better understand Quentin and his past, she turns to his former lovers for insights into his repugnant past and tightly guarded feelings. Quentin's violent and abusive past create twists and turns for Dominique leaving her forced to deal with her passion that fueled his rage. Dominique seeks guidance from her friends, clients and Quentin's former and current acquaintances which often times prove to be more a hindrance than helpful.moreless

    Los Angeles Times Kevin Thomas

A handsome work of authoritative yet understated style, responsive to mood, subtleties and nuance in exploring its especially well-drawn and intelligent lovers.

    Variety

A skillful blend of fire and ice that subtly conveys the emotional extremes fraught in the relationship.

The New York Times Stephen Holden

Watching this handsomely filmed, deftly edited but rather dry movie, you keep imagining the juice that a director like Pedro Almodovar could have squeezed out of the same story.
