Secret of the Incas is an adventure film from 1954 about the search for an ancient Incan artifact. Legend states that the Incan empire was destroyed when the golden and jeweled artifact was stolen from the Temple of the Sun. If it is returned, the empire will return to its former glory. Rugged American adventurer, Harry Steele (Charlton Heston) possesses parts of the map that could lead him to the artifact and races against his nemeses archaeologist Stanley Moorehead (Robert Young) and con man Ed Morgan (Thomas Mitchell) to find it. Working alongside him is a pretty Romanian refugee who helps Harry with his quest. Filmed on location at the stunning and treacherous Machu Picchu in Peru, the film also used upwards of 500 Peruvian locals in the film and helped increase tourism to Peruvian archaeological sites such as Machu Picchu. Also, some buffs have cited Secret of the Incas as the inspiration for the Indian Jones film Raiders of the Lost Ark because of similarities in plot and theme.moreless
