Secret Agent, an early work by director Alfred Hitchcock, is the story of a World War I British army man whose death is faked by the government. Thought to have died in battle, Edgar Brodie (John Gielgud), a famous novelist, was really recruited by the government to eliminate a German spy. Richard Ashenden, as Brodie is now known, and agent Elsa Carrington (Madeleine Carroll), who poses as his wife, are sent to Switzerland to assassinate the foreign agent. They meet up with a professional hit-man known as "The General" (Peter Lorre) and as they search for clues and follow leads, they're led down the wrong path and up the wrong mountain. Just as they discover the agent's real identity, he slips out of their grasp and takes Elsa with him. It won't be an easy task, but they'll have to catch the train that Robert Marvin (Robert Young) and Elsa are on.
