Movie Summary

Ang Lee
Sense and Sensibility is a British romantic drama film that was awarded Best Picture of the Year at the Golden Globes, Best Adapted Scene Play the the Academy Award and was nominated for six more awards. Based on the best selling novel by the same name written by Jane Austen this story takes place in 1811. The story begins finding the Dashwood family in despair after Mr. Dashwood dies. The Dashwoods learn that Mr. Dashwood has left most of the inheritance to his son John from a previous marriage and forces the family to move in with Sir John Middleton, a cousin of the widowed Mrs. Dashwood. The Dashwood sisters, practical, level-headed Elinore (Emma Thompson), and romantic, passionate Marianne (Kate Winslet) suddenly find their marriageability greatly affected by their family's misfortune. Elinore develops a relationship with wealthy Edward Ferrars (Hugh Grant) but his family disapproves and does not permit it. Colonel Brandon (Alan Rickman) falls in love with Marianne at first sight, but Marianne seeks the affections of John Willoughby. Both relationships face turmoil and heartbreak. Will a happy ending find its way for both the sister who is all sense, and the one who is all sensibility?moreless

An enjoyable film, and yet it left me somehow unsatisfied...there is too much contrivance in the way [Austen] dispatches her men to London when she is done with them.
