Senso is a 1954 Italian film written and directed by Luchino Visconti and starring Farley Granger, Alida Valli, and Heinz Moog. The film is an adaptation of a novella of the same name by Camillo Boito. Set during the Italian occupation of Austria in the 1860's, the film tells the story of the Italian Countess Livia Serpieri (Valli). When she is witness to a raid by a group of Italian Nationalists opposing the occupation, Livia meets Austrian officer Franz Mahler (Granger). Despite her awareness that he is merely using her for her money and power, Livia begins an affair with Franz. She foolishly gives all of her money to Franz, enabling the Austrians to defeat the Italians in a brutal massacre. As Franz's interest in Livia begins to wane, she does everything in her power to keep him around, but she will soon discover that Franz has ulterior motives for his courtship.moreless
