    • TRIVIA (1)

      • The original idea was for Spencer Tracy to play "John Malcolm", Vivien Leigh to play "Anne Shankland" and for Laurence Olivier to play "Major Pollock" and to direct the film. However, Burt Lancaster, whose company was making the film, decided he'd like to play Malcolm himself, and Olivier and Leigh, who were then still married, decided at once to leave the project.

    • NOTES (1)

      • Terrence Rattigan's original play is in fact two short plays which take place at the same time and in the same setting, with the same characters turning up in supporting roles in each. On stage, the idea is that the same actress should play both "Sybil" and "Anne", whilst the same actor plays both "Major Pollock" and "John Malcolm". Rattigan initially suggested that this idea be retained for the film, but it was clearly impractical and the film-makers rejected it. Rattigan left the project and his screenplay was rewritten by John Gay.
