Seven Cities of Gold is the 1955 adventure story about the Spanish explorers of San Diego in the 18th century, looking for the legendary seven cities of gold. Spanish soldiers serve as escorts for Father Junipero Serra's (Michael Rennie) mission to California. Local residents will have nothing to do with the interlopers and threaten to undo the whole trip. However, they have not anticipated the Lord's intervention on behalf of the missionary. Serra is a disabled but determined traveler, and this historic epic captures a bit of the identity of the man who has now been beatified by the Vatican. Serra has to deal with a motley group of soldiers in his own group, including the calm and commanding Captain Gaspar de Portola (Anthony Quinn) and the angry but giving Jose Mendoza (Richard Egan). On the other hand, he must deal with the erratic behaviors of the native Indian chief Matuwir (Jeffrey Hunter). Serra is dedicated to his mission against all odds.moreless
