Seven is the 1995 psychological thriller that takes the serial killer film to new heights of suspense and terror, with an absolutely shattering denouement that outdoes anything in the entirety of Silence of the Lambs. Old, wizened, wrestling-with-apathy and about to retire Homicide detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) is finally getting out of the cesspool environment of the city when he's partnered with a new, young idealistic detective just joining the precinct named David Mills (Brad Pitt). One fateful day, they are both called to a peculiar murder scene which sets off a chain of grisly murders, each relating in some way to the seven deadly sins. Each murder is grislier than the last, the clues to and from ever more disturbingly brilliant. The two detectives eventually get lucky and pin down a suspect named John Doe (Kevin Spacey), whom they let slip through their fingers and get away ' until he turns himself in two murders away from competing his masterpiece ' at which time the disturbing outcome is all up in the air'

Metacritic Score

  • 90

    Variety

This weirdly off-kilter suspenser goes well beyond the usual police procedural or killer-on-a-rampage yarn due to a fine script, striking craftsmanship and a masterful performance ...

  • 88

    Chicago Sun-Times Roger Ebert

A dark, grisly, horrifying and intelligent thriller.

  • 70

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

Noticeable skill has gone into the making of Seven, but it's hard to take much pleasure in that.
