Seventh Heaven is a 1937 romantic drama film that focuses on an atheist sewer worker, Chico (James Stewart). One day, Chico sees a woman named Diane (Simone Simon) getting beaten by her sister Nana (Gale Sondergaard) because she would not entertain a wealthy man. Chico gets between the two women and ends the fight. Feeling bad for Diane, Chico agrees to a job as a street washer from Father Chevillon (Jean Hersholt) in exchange for taking Diane in. Chico begins to change his views about God, while Diane becomes suicidal. He talks Diane out of ending her life, convincing her that life is worth living. Chico and Diane become closer and begin to develop feelings for each other. Just when both of their lives seem to be perfect, Chico receives a draft notice and is forced to leave Diane.
