Movie Summary

Tony Stone
Not Available
Severed Ways tells the story of two Viking men, Orn (Tony Stone) and Volnard (Fiore Tedesco) in AD 1007. When their expedition loses a battle after being attacked, they flee and accidentally abandon the two men. The film depicts their struggle to survive in a new land, North America. It also depicts their encounters with several Northern American peoples, including a group of Christian monks and "Skraelings" (the Norse term for the Northern American indigenous people). The men take separate paths according to their disparate beliefs and attempts to survive, but are eventually reunited. The film uses documentary style camera work and structure and has very little dialogue throughout. The dialogue that does exist is in Swedish and Indian, but the film is subtitled. Some have criticized the film for its unflinching portrayal of life in the wild and for the sometimes grotesque depictions of both animal and human violence, but it has also been celebrated for its historical perspective and honesty.moreless

While most of the scenes in Tony Stone's peculiar Middle Ages art project look like a homemade educational reenactment, the film is actually more involving than it should be.
