Shadows is a film about interracial relationships during the turbulent times of the 1950s. It was written and directed by John Cassavetes, with Shadows being his directorial debut. The film focuses on Benny (played by Ben Carruthers), a world-weary soul lost in the Beat generation. Lelia (played by Lelia Goldoni), his sister, is of a noticeably lighter shade than her brother, setting her apart from other other siblings in ways she is only starting to understand. Then there is Hugh, a singer who's aspirations are soon to be realized by his agent. One day Lelia meets Tony and falls in love with him. She hopes for it to work out, until Tony is introduced to Hugh, igniting racial tensions between all of them. The film is highly improvisational, featuring amateur actors and actresses who ad-lib most of their lines and fall into situations that are unobtrusively captured on film. It has been described as a "watershed moment" in independent film, leading the way for more films of its type. Shadows won the Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival in 1960 .moreless
