Woody Allen
Released:
1992
Rating:
PG-13

Shadows and Fog is the 1991 comedy and mystery combined, a signature Woody Allen film with the usual philosophical quandaries, existential angst, and all-star cast. A serial killer is on the loose, and nervous Max Kleinman (Woody Allen), a bookshop owner, is enlisted by the local citizens' lynch mob to join their search for the culprit. Kleinman is as afraid of them as he is of the killer, so he joins in only to protect himself. Wandering the dark and shadowy streets at night, Kleinman is then abandoned by the other vigilantes. He encounters a nightmarish circle of eccentric characters, making Kleinman the isolated voice of reason in a metaphorically and literally foggy night. The characters spill out of a circus that comes to town, and through an interpersonal conflict, one of the circus performers ends up wandering around at night like Kleinman. Irmy (Mia Farrow) finds herself alone and helpless with Kleinman as her only protection. To make matters worse, Kleinman becomes the primary suspect.
