Shaft is the 2000 action packed cop feature reprisal of the iconic 70's character, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Jeffrey Wright, Christian Bale, Toni Collette, Busta Rhymes, Vanessa L. Williams, and Mekhi Phifer. Samuel L. Jackson plays John Shaft, a bad ass NYPD detective and nephew of the original Shaft (Richard Roundtree). When called in to investigate a murder believed to be a high profile hate crime, Shaft uncovers a web of corruption and secrecy. Frustrated at the way the law works, Shaft hands in his badge and decides to become a vigilante, serving up his own brand of justice. But when he is tailed by two cops on the killer's payroll, things get bloody. Shaft proves that is is the cat that won't cop out when there's danger all about. He's the man that would risk his neck for his brother man. He is a bad mother...Shaft. Can you dig it?

Metacritic Score

  • 70

    Variety Robert Koehler

Samuel L. Jackson instantly takes the mantle from Mr. Shaft himself, Richard Roundtree, and runs with it on pure style and charisma.

  • 40

    Los Angeles Times Kenneth Turan

The main thing the new Shaft gets right is casting for the title role. It's too bad the rest of the film doesn't hold your attention the way he does.

  • 30

The New York Times A.O. Scott

This may be the first movie that runs under two hours and yet has no attention span. Characters are abandoned and picked up; narrative threads dissolve before your very eyes.
